What to post on Instagram for business: the 4 post types that sell

Anyone who runs a business and opens Instagram to post usually gets stuck on the same question: what to post on Instagram for business today? The answer is not to post more. It is to post with a purpose. Every post should do one of four things: answer a question, show proof, show what happens behind the scenes or make an offer.

With these 4 types, you can plan the whole week in half an hour and never stare at a blank screen again. Here is each one, with examples for local businesses.

Why posting a lot does not sell

There are profiles with 20,000 followers and an empty schedule, and profiles with 800 followers and a full one. The difference is almost never the number of posts. It is what each post does for the sale.

Motivational quotes, holiday posts and pretty product photos without context may get likes, but they do not make anyone send a message. Likes do not pay the bills. What makes someone reach out is understanding that you solve their problem, trusting you and knowing how to buy.

What to post on Instagram for business: the 4 types

1. Question posts

These answer a question your clients already ask. "How long does headlight restoration last?", "Does fondant melt in the heat?", "Which haircut suits a round face?".

Where to find the questions: in your messages, in the comments, in what people ask at the counter. Write them all down for a week and you will have content for months. This type of post attracts new people, because it is exactly what they are searching for.

2. Proof posts

These show that it works: before and after, a client testimonial, a screenshot of a message (with permission), the number of jobs done, a client using the product.

The secret is to show the client's result, not to praise yourself. "Look at how Carl's headlights turned out" is far more convincing than "We are the best in town".

3. Behind-the-scenes posts

Show how you work: the preparation, the care, the materials, the organization, the person behind the business. Behind the scenes is what justifies your price. When clients see the work involved, they understand why you are not the cheapest option.

4. Offer posts

This is the post that asks for the sale: open slots this week, orders now open, a promotion, a launch. Many people feel shy about this one, and then followers like everything and never buy, because nobody told them they could.

The rule is not to post only offers. Mixed with the other three types, the offer reaches someone who already trusts you.

How to plan the week without getting stuck

A simple calendar for someone who posts 4 times a week:

Day Type Example for a barbershop
Monday Question "Which haircut suits your face shape?"
Wednesday Behind the scenes Video of the razor being prepared
Friday Proof Before and after of a beard trim
Saturday Offer "Last slots for today, message us"

Once a month, set aside an hour to record several videos at once. It is much faster than stopping every day to produce something.

Video: the first 3 seconds decide everything

On Reels, people decide in the first three seconds whether to keep watching. Start with what hooks them, never with "Hi guys, how are you?". Some hooks that work:

  • "If your headlights look like this, do not replace them yet."
  • "The mistake that makes a cake sink in the middle."
  • "Three haircuts everyone is asking for this month."

To edit these videos without paying for software, you can use Clipchamp, which is free. See whether Clipchamp is free and what it does.

The post brought them in. Now what?

All this content sends people to your profile. If the bio is confusing, you lose them right there. That is why, before polishing your posts, you should fix your Instagram bio for business.

And when the message arrives, the work is not over: replying with just the price and waiting is the fastest way to lose the sale. In the Instagram for business course I show, step by step, the 4 post types, how to plan the week and how to guide the conversation until the sale closes. Frequently asked questions

How often should I post?

Consistency beats volume. For most local businesses, 3 to 5 posts a week, spread across the 4 types, already change the results.

Is a photo or a video better?

Short video (Reels) is the format that brings new people to your profile the most. Photos and carousels keep the people who already follow you. Use both.

Can I repost something that worked?

You can and you should. Most of your followers did not see it the first time. Change the hook, the cover or the format and post it again.
